5 Tips for Making Fast Food Options Healthier

We all have busy lives and for some of us eating is the last thing on our minds. Once we feel that growling in our stomach, we just want to get food in there as quickly as possible so we can get back to work. Likely we opt for something quick, such as a fast-food option. ‘Fast Food’ doesn’t only include McDonalds, Wendy’s, Taco Bell and the like. There are healthier fast-food options out there such as Sweetgreen, Just Salad, Cava or even Chipotle. There are many ways to make some of these ‘Fast Food’ options healthier for those of us who live busy lifestyles and are always on the go. Here are some tips for making fast food healthier:

1. Find a place where you can create your own bowl or salad.
a. Places like this have a lot of optionality for you to pick out ingredients to make your meal nutritious and fulfilling when you don’t have the option to make something at home.
2. Choose colorful whole food ingredients for your meal.
a. Taste the rainbow and try to add as much color into your meals as you can. Salad places often offer tons of topping options for you to choose from.
3. Choose grilled options over fried
a. Choose grilled or baked proteins and vegetables over anything fried
4. Opt for a dressing with less ingredients.
a. Most places will have the option of using lemon or olive oil instead of those pre-made heavier creamy dressings. If there are only pre-made dressings, find out what exactly is in it or keep a bottle of good quality olive oil or balsamic vinegar at your desk, so you know exactly what you are getting.
i. Tip: ask for the dressing on the side!
5. Watch Portions
a. Often times the portions are a lot larger than what you would make for yourself at home. Opt for smaller sizes if possible or try sharing larger portions with a friend. You can even ask for an extra bowl and separate the meal into two meals and save one for another time.

5 Easy Tips to Implement for Digestive Health

1. Take your time! Many of us are so accustomed to eating as fast as possible without ever putting the fork down. Try putting your fork down between bites and give your digestive system time to catch up!
2. Chew thoroughly! Why not make the digestion process easier for your body by breaking down your food as much as possible from the get-go. By not chewing enough, this could lead to bloat and stomach discomfort.
3. Eat until you are 80% full! This is a practice done by the Okinawans in Okinawa, Japan called ‘Hara Hachi Bu’ where they remind themselves of this before beginning a meal. Okinawa has the highest percentage of centenarians in the world! This will reduce overeating, weight gain and bloat.
4. Drink warm lemon water before meals. This will aid in digestion by helping your body break down food faster. If you need to drink water during meals, I recommend small sips to not dilute stomach acids that are helping you to digest food.
5. Take a few deep breaths before meals to help get into a relaxed state which will help to promote better digestion. Rest and digest!
